Greece in talks with Israel to develop 2 bln euro ‘Iron Dome’

Greece is in discussions with Israel to collaborate on a €2 billion project to develop an anti-aircraft and missile defense system similar to Israel’s Iron Dome. This endeavor is part of a larger effort by Greece to modernize its military capabilities in light of its ongoing rivalry with Turkey, despite recent improvements in diplomatic relations. Greek Defense Minister Nikos Dendias has confirmed the initiative, which falls under a comprehensive 10-year military procurement strategy. The strategy includes plans to acquire up to 40 new F-35 fighter jets and drones from the U.S., as well as four Belharra frigates and Rafale jets from France. Greece currently operates a mix of U.S. Patriot and Russian S-300 defense systems.
